In Loving Memory

In Loving Memory

By Jax Soon-Legaspi

a flicker of the light in the bedroom

the panic of displacement

and suddenly everything is doubtful

have we been here before?

faces of strangers, fleeting and flying

smiles of friends a million times shared

how familiar is this

how long have i known you?

a slip of the tongue, a momentary

quirk in the typeface

slipping like boots on autumn leaves

we think we hear whispers in the silence

and conjure dreams in the darkness

eyes wide open

as real as anything else

as real as my hands in yours

as real as dirt under your feet

as real as the flickering light

doesn't that scare you?
